EPH announces groundbreaking partnership with Drax Power Limited to produce fly ash for use in green cement

EP Power Minerals GmbH (EPPM), a subsidiary of Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH), announces a transformative 20-year joint venture agreement between its subsidiary Power Minerals Limited (PML) and Drax Power Limited (Drax). This collaboration will establish a cutting-edge factory for processing millions of tonnes of legacy coal ash into fly ash.
Fly ash is Supplementary Cementitious Material (SCM) used in green cement and concrete. SCMs represent sustainable source of material for the construction industry by lowering carbon emissions during the production of cement, a process which contributes around 8 % of global CO2 emissions annually.
The state-of-the-art facility will be located close to Drax Power Station, which has been transformed into the largest generator of renewable electricity in the UK, after switching to biomass. The power station can supply renewable electricity to around 5 million homes.
Under the agreement, PML will construct, own and operate the facility, while Drax will sell its legacy Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) to the joint venture and supply power to the site. Production is expected to begin by the end of 2026, with the factory having an expected initial annual production capacity of 400,000 tonnes. EPPM estimates that, over the course of the project, the utilization of Drax’s PFA will lead to a reduction of at least 6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, compared to conventional cement production processes.
„This substantial investment will guarantee an opportunity to utilize large volumes of legacy ash from Drax Power Station, further realizing incremental value from the site while helping to reduce global carbon emissions. This positions us to become the leading player in the UK fly ash market for the foreseeable future.
This project represents not only an exciting new chapter for EPPM but also a stable flow of high-quality fly ash for the UK construction industry, driving innovation and sustainability within the sector for decades to come, “adds Jan Špringl, CEO of Energetický a průmyslový holding.
