EP Power Europe increases its stake in Schkopau power plant
21. 2. 2020
EP Power Europe, a.s. (EPPE), a subsidiary of Energetický a průmyslový holding, a.s. (EPH), through its subsidiary Saale Energie GmbH, signed an agreement with Uniper on the purchase of Uniper’s stake of about 58 percent in the Schkopau lignite-fired power plant in Saxony-Anhalt. Saale Energie already holds a stake of around 42 percent in the Schkopau power plant and will take over Uniper’s stake with effect from October 2021.
With a net capacity of around 900 megawatts, the Schkopau lignite-fired power plant is an important component of Central Germany’s energy supply. It not only supplies electricity for public supply, but also energy for a neighbouring chemical park and for Deutsche Bahn. EPPE is also an owner of the coal mining company MIBRAG, an operator of the Profen open-cast mine, interconnecting coal extraction with power generation and therefore ensuring stable and reliable power supply. This will preserve industrial jobs in Central Germany in the long term.
„We are committed to our role as a reliable employer to deliver new perspectives for the 150 highly qualified employees and will cooperate with Uniper to ensure their smooth transition to our company. At the same time we take responsibility for securing electricity supply, steam supply to the neighbouring industrial site as well as the delivery of Bahnstrom to Deutsche Bahn,“ said Jan Špringl, CEO of EPPE.
Completion of the transaction is still subject to the approval by the German Federal Cartel Office
